Raontech, a leading innovator in micro-display technology, has introduced a groundbreaking 0.38-inch full-color silicon-based MicroLED designed for augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) applications. The highlight of their development is their Foveated Display technology, which promises to revolutionize how we experience ultra-high-resolution visuals while drastically reducing power consumption.

Redefining Display Efficiency with Foveated Technology

Foveated Display technology is a cutting-edge approach that adjusts resolution based on the user’s line of sight. The central area of the screen, where the eyes focus, is rendered in ultra-high resolution, while peripheral areas are displayed in lower resolution. This dynamic resolution adjustment minimizes power consumption without compromising visual quality, paving the way for more efficient and immersive MR experiences.

“Foveated Display reduces image data to one-tenth of the original size, enabling ultra-high resolution with a fraction of the power,” said Raontech CEO Kim Bo-eun. This advancement overcomes a major challenge in MR devices, where reducing the display’s power consumption is critical even as processors like Apple’s M2 handle demanding tasks.

A Leap Forward in Mixed Reality Displays

The Foveated Display technology aligns with Apple’s pioneering Vision Pro headset, which uses a foveated rendering system. Raontech, however, is the first to implement this resolution-adaptive technology directly into the display hardware itself, rather than relying solely on application processors (AP).

Raontech’s patented innovations enable displays to seamlessly shift between high and low resolutions. This combination of adaptive resolution with data upscaling technology ensures crisp visuals while optimizing energy efficiency.

MicroLED Innovations for AR and XR

In addition to the foveated displays, Raontech revealed their new 0.38-inch full-color MicroLED-on-silicon (LEDoS) panel for AR devices. This compact, high-performance display demonstrates the potential for advanced optics in next-generation AR glasses.

Raontech also launched a microdisplay panel driver controller system-on-chip (SoC) to support its vision. The SoC, capable of running both LCoS and OLEDoS panels, now supports resolutions up to 4K while reducing power consumption by 40%.

The Future of AR and MR Display Technology

Raontech’s developments position it as a major player in the global display market. By targeting the OLEDoS panel segment for MR devices, the company is addressing industry challenges such as cost and resolution scalability.

“Creating this technology required combining multiple innovations,” said CEO Kim. “While it’s challenging to develop these systems independently, collaboration with global companies will bring this technology to life.”

With these innovations, Raontech is paving the way for a new era of lightweight, efficient, and visually stunning mixed reality devices, offering a glimpse of what’s to come in the ever-evolving world of AR and MR displays.
